What a 6-plant hydroponic system actually costs (full parts breakdown)
Build guides tend to quote a headline number and leave out the tubing, the fittings, and the second trip to the hardware shop. Here is the honest full cost of a six-plant PVC system, including the parts people forget.
The parts list, in full

The parts nobody mentions
These are the items that turn a $50 build into a $70 one, and they are the reason the second hardware shop trip happens.
- A 3-inch hole saw ($10 to $15). If you do not already own one this is a real cost, though it is reusable forever. Some hardware shops will make the cuts for you.
- Silicone sealant ($5). For the outlet fitting. Optional until the first leak, at which point it is not optional.
- Mounting hardware ($5 to $10). Brackets or a frame to hold the pipe at the right slope. Easy to overlook when you are costing the pipe itself.
- A timer ($5). Only if you are adding a grow light, but most indoor builds eventually do.
Where spending more is worth it
- The reservoir. Opaque, always. A clear tote will grow algae within a fortnight and you will end up replacing it.
- pH testing. The cheapest item on the list with the largest effect on whether the build succeeds.
Where it is not
- The pump. A $10 aquarium pump moves water exactly as well as a $30 one branded for hydroponics.
- The pipe. Standard drainage PVC is fine. There is no need for a hydroponics-branded channel at four times the price.
